Abstract

Metaphor is one of the most significant linguistic and cognitive devices in human communication. Traditionally, metaphor has been regarded as a stylistic figure used primarily in literature and poetry. However, contemporary linguistic research demonstrates that metaphor plays a much broader role in everyday language, thought, and communication. It enables speakers to explain abstract concepts through familiar experiences, express emotions, construct meanings, and influence the way people understand the world. This article examines the role of metaphor in the English language and communication, focusing on its linguistic, cognitive, pragmatic, and cultural functions. It also explores the use of metaphor in everyday conversations, academic discourse, political speeches, and media communication.
