The development of digital technologies has significantly transformed the educational environment and created new opportunities for organizing the learning process in higher education. Distance learning enables students to access educational materials, communicate with instructors, complete assignments, and develop professional competencies regardless of their geographical location. However, its effectiveness depends on various factors, including the quality of instructional design, students’ digital literacy, motivation, self-regulation, access to technological resources, and the level of interaction between participants in the educational process. This article examines the effectiveness of distance learning in higher education, identifies its principal advantages and limitations, and discusses pedagogical conditions that contribute to improved learning outcomes. The study is based on a review and comparative analysis of academic literature on online, distance, and blended learning. Previous research indicates that online learning can produce learning outcomes comparable to those of traditional classroom instruction, while blended learning has demonstrated positive results in several comparative studies. Nevertheless, technology alone does not guarantee educational effectiveness. The article concludes that distance learning should be implemented through a learner-centred approach that combines clear learning objectives, interactive teaching methods, continuous feedback, accessible digital resources, and systematic assessment.
